Welsh Labour Leader backs a Yes vote in AV referendum

Welsh Labour Leader and First Minister, Carwyn Jones, has today (25th January 2011) said he will be voting in favour of voting reform in Westminster elections, in the referendum scheduled to be held on 5th May - the same day as the Welsh Assembly elections.

Commenting on his decision, Carwyn Jones said:

“I will be voting in favour of an Alternative Vote system in Westminster elections, to replace the current first-past-the-post process.

“However, my immediate and absolute priorities are firstly to secure a successful ‘Yes’ vote in our own referendum here in Wales on 3rd March. Then I want to make sure Welsh Labour wins a clear majority of seats in the Assembly elections on the 5th May.

“By bringing the AV referendum forward, is does beg the important question that if this change is good enough to elect Members of the House of Commons, then surely its good enough to elect Members of the Welsh Assembly too?

“If the AV referendum is carried on 5th May, I believe it would make sense to then re-examine the voting system in the Assembly.”
